Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park in southern Iceland is a realm of glaciers and spectacular ice caves that draws adventurers from all over the world. The vast national park (one of three in Iceland) is separated into four areas and comprises the Vatnajökull glacier and its environs. There are several tourist centers; those in Skaftafell Ice Cave and Höfn are open all year, while Skriuklaustur and Jökulsárgljfur are closed in winter.

The greatest time to see Skaftafell Ice Cave is in the winter after heavy rain has washed away the glacier's top layer. The cave is drenched in beautiful blue light if seen at the proper moment. Off-season group tours to all areas are possible. If you are in good shape, you might want to attempt a glacial walk with an experienced guide. The excursions take you onto the ice, where you can observe glacial fractures and caves and even sip fresh water from little pools on the surface.
