Rhine Falls
The most potent waterfall in Europe is the Rhine Falls, which is situated in Switzerland. The greatest cascade in all of Europe, Rhine Falls is a natural wonder. In this case, the phrase "biggest" refers to volume rather than height, but either way, its incredible power is sure to please. It is situated not far from the sleepy village of Schaffhausen, just a short day trip from Zurich. Right in the center of the falls, a towering rock creates a distinctive cascade.
Around 14,000–17,000 years ago, while the riverbed was being narrowed by erosion-resistant rocks, the Rhine Falls were created. About 500,000 years ago, the first glacial advances produced landscapes. The Rhine flowed from Schaffhausen past Klettgau until the end of the Wolstonian Stage about 132,000 years ago. Later, gravel filled this former riverbed.
It's fun to try and discover the greatest viewing platform and photo opportunity at each one because there are many on either side and an amazing vantage position from this famed central point. For those looking for a thrill, you may even take a boat right up to the edge of the river that is falling. There are many stairs here, so be prepared, but the view is definitely worth the effort.
Location: On the border between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich next to Schaffhausen, in northern Switzerland
