In the social sciences, humanities, and scientific sciences, the university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a wide range of subjects. The institution was established in 1972 as an alternative to traditional Danish universities, which had been the subject of many student upheavals in the late 1960s.
Roskilde University offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs in four areas: humanities, humanistic technologies, social science, and science. At RU, the typical educational structure was two years of general studies in one of the major scientific fields followed by four years of specialization.
Today, the university uses the Danish educational system, which consists of three years of bachelor's studies followed by a two-year master's degree. Roskilde University offers four departments (institutes) that specialize in a wide range of subjects, ranging from mathematics to international development.
