Saimdang: Memoir of Colors

Lee Young-ae plays Shin Saimdang, a great Joseon-era artist and calligrapher who lived in the early 16th century, in the South Korean drama Saimdang, Memoir of Colors. Since January 26, 2017, it has shown every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:00 (KST) on SBS. Lee's television return comes 14 years after her pan-Asian smash drama Dae Jang Geum (2003).

A Korean university art history lecturer (Lee Young-ae) unearths a long-lost diary of a historical figure, revealing the mystery surrounding a recently discovered, mysterious ancient painting and providing insight into the extraordinary life of Shin Saimdang (also played by Lee), a renowned poet-artist during the Joseon era. The narrative begins in the Joseon period, 500 years ago. Shin Saimdang, despite her childhood, swiftly establishes a reputation as a gifted artist and notoriously adventurous girl, scaling walls to get into other people's homes. She is the second daughter of Shin Myung-hwa, a Confucian scholar who is loyal to King Jungjong. The King is portrayed as paranoid about losing his throne, and losing control of government to factions.
