Seker & Kurban Festivals
The third day, eker Bayram (Sugar Holiday), immediately follows Ramadan and is marked by family reunions, the distribution of gifts and candy to youngsters, and the prohibition of dining out. On the night of Arife, the night following Kadir Gecesi, you will need to make reservations for tables at reputable restaurants early. The 4thday Kurban Bayram (Festival of Sacrifice), when a sheep is sacrificed to commemorate Abraham's son Ishmael (a Koranic interpretation of the Testament account), is marked by a large slaughter of lambs and goats.
Traveling gets difficult during the Seker and Kurban festivals, so make your reservations for a seat on any long-distance train or airline well in advance. This is one of Turkey's most popular events. Another thing to bear in mind is that many stores, banks, museums, and government offices will be closed during these periods.
