Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Before the zombie genre became the omnipresent (and toothless) beast that we now face daily, filmmaker Edgar Wright put a darkly comedic perspective on the realm of the undead with Shaun of the Dead. Shaun, now a cult classic, masterfully mixes terror, gross-out comedy, and desert-dry gags for a unique experience.
Wright's skill is that he simulates the shuffling zombie invasion with a tone that is equally lifeless (pan). Of course, Shaun also has some broad physical humor and memorable set pieces that the cast-which includes Simon Pegg and Nick Frost-pulls off flawlessly.
Under Wright's direction, Shaun of the Dead stuffs every scene with so many little, humorous touches that it's difficult to notice them all in a single watching. This is a rare geek favorite that lives up to the hype.
