Shrek
Shrek is a 2001 computer-animated fantasy comedy film based on William Steig's 1990 fairy tale picture book of the same name. The film ridicules other fairy tale adaptations, with a focus on Disney animated films. The plot follows Shrek (Myers), an ogre who discovers his swamp has been overrun by fairy tale creatures who have been expelled by the wicked Lord Farquaad (Lithgow), who is vying for the throne. Farquaad agrees to let Shrek back into his swamp in exchange for rescuing Princess Fiona (Diaz), whom Farquaad plans to marry. Shrek sets out on his quest with the aid of Donkey (Murphy), but he quickly falls in love with the princess, who is hiding a secret that will change his life forever.
Critics complimented the film for its animation, voice performances, soundtrack, script, and comedy, noting that it appealed to both adults and children. On May 18, 2001, the film was released in theaters in the United States, garnering $484 million worldwide on a $60 million production budget, making it the fourth-highest-grossing picture of 2001. Shrek was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
