Shwedagon Pagoda: The Most Sacred Pagoda
One of Myanmar's most popular tourist attractions is the Shwedagon Pagoda. It is the most sacred Buddhist stupa in Myanmar and one of the most important religious reliquary monuments in the world.
The outside of this 99-meter-high golden in Yangon is covered in around 60 tons of gold. You can see a 76-carat diamond at the top of the stupa, as well as more than 7,000 lesser ones around the complex, if you look up. Smaller pagodas and pavilions devoted to various Buddhist deities can be seen inside Shwedagon. The entrance fee is MKK 8000 ($6), and you can expect to spend up to three hours here. Be advised that you will be required to remove your shoes, and it is recommended that you bring a plastic bag to carry your shoes in. If you only visit one pagoda in Myanmar during your travels and tours, this is it!
