Skakavitsa Waterfall
The Skakavitsa Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Bulgaria's Rila Mountains. It is located on the Skakavitsa River and is part of Rila National Park. The waterfall is located roughly 2,000 meters above sea level, with water cascading from a height of 70 meters. The Skakavitsa Waterfall is a popular tourist destination in the area, thanks in part to the century-old indigenous Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce) trees that surround it.
The Skakavitsa Waterfall is a popular tourist destination in the area, thanks to the century-old indigenous white fir (Pinum peuce) trees that surround it. The waterfall is about 15 minutes' walk from the "Skakavitsa" lodge. To get to the hut, use the trail that begins at the first lift station at the major resort - Panichishte, Rila Mountains. The path is well-marked and will take you about 30-40 minutes to reach the hut. Then you take the path close to the river that leads directly to the waterfall. The walk to the waterfall and back will take about 3-4 hours. As the Seven Rila Lakes are a two-hour hike away, it’s a great idea to combine Skakavitsa with a visit to Bulgaria’s most famous lake group. For the best chance to see Skakavitsa, you should go there in spring or autumn or after a rainy period in general. And definitely not in high summer, when it’s almost sure to be dry!
