The Last Princess (2016)
In 1925, Japan rules Korea, and Princess Deokhye (Son Ye-jin), the last princess of the Joseon Dynasty, is compelled to migrate to Japan to attend school. She misses her home and makes many efforts to return after finishing school, but is stopped by pro-Japanese commander Han Taek-soo (Yoon Je-moon). One day, she is reunited with her childhood buddy, Kim Jang-han (Park Hae-il), a Japanese army officer who is also involved in the Korean independence fight. Kim devises a covert plot to transport Deokhye and her brother Yi Un (Park Soo-young) to Shanghai, the headquarters of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
This attempt fails when Han Taek-soo (Yoon Je-moon) learns the scheme, and Deokhye and Kim are separated and lose communication. In 1931, she is forced to marry Count S Takeyuki, and the following year, after giving birth to their daughter, she gets into insanity. Kim goes on to become a newspaper writer and ultimately tracks down Deokhye in a Japanese mental institution, decades after they were separated. He then persuades the South Korean authorities to let her stay, and Deokhye is ultimately allowed to return to her motherland in 1962.
