The Old Fashioned
The Dairy State's three primary food categories are beer, brats, and cheese, and there's no better spot to grab all three than the Old Fashioned. The rustic, woodsy pub is furnished with some of the Madison area's most unique sports and cultural relics and has two bars on either side, where you can warm up with craft beer and a spicy fried egg (the Wisconsin way) or a drink like the hand-muddled, brandy Old Fashioned (the Wisconsin way). Dishes using products from throughout the state, such as Bleu Mont Dairy cheese, Sheboygan brats, and Greenbush doughnuts, are on the menu. A beer-battered walleye sandwich and two Sheboygan bratwursts with toppings on a firm bread are local favorites. Whatever you choose, don't forget to get a couple of orders of beer-battered cheese curds.
When it comes down to it, the Bourbon Old Fashioned is just a slug of whiskey that has been seasoned and sweetened. Despite its sleek simplicity, the drink is as relevant now as it was 200 years ago when it first grabbed the hearts of consumers. You might trace a straight connection from this drink to the earliest documented definition of the cocktail category in general (around 1806), which asked for alcohol, sugar, water, and bitters. With whiskey, sugar, water, and fragrant bitters, the Old Fashioned strikes all the right notes. You could just just create the cocktail and forgo the historical lesson. If you're already thirsty, go for the latter.
