The State University of Zanzibar
State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) is a state university in Zanzibar, Tanzania, located on Unguja Island. The institution was created in 1999 by a legislation of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and began operations in 2002. The School of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages (IKFL), the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE), the School of Education (SE), the School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS), and the Computer Centre currently make up the University (CC). Additional institutes and schools will be formed as the University grows and as the Act requires.
For many years, the Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages has been offering certificate and diploma programs in Swahili, Arabic, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German. It has also been teaching Swahili to international students from other countries. The Institute will continue to work on this project, with the exception that English will be taught in the School of Education, Arts, and Sciences, while Swahili will be taught at the university level.
Courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts with Education (B.A. Ed), Bachelor of Science with Education (B.Sc. Ed), and Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences are offered by the founding School of Education, Arts, and Sciences. These establishments will provide teachers who are badly needed for the development of the country.
