Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry is an American animated media property and series of comedic short films founded by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940. The series, most known for its 161 theatrical short films produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, focuses on the rivalry between the title characters, a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry. A number of recurrent characters appear in several short films.

The series depicts hilarious battles between two longtime adversaries, a cat (Tom) and a mouse (Jerry). The plots of each short mainly revolve around Tom and Jerry's numerous attempts to outdo each other, as well as the mayhem and damage that ensues. Despite Tom's shrewd methods (whether they work or not), determined and energetic attitude, enormous stature, and great general intellect, he seldom succeeds in getting the better of Jerry, owing to Jerry's crafty talents, luck, and lack of tendency to be a little too reckless. On other times, though, they have demonstrated true camaraderie and concern for one other's well-being. In the shorts Busy Buddies and Tot Watchers, the duo lay aside their competition to achieve a shared purpose, such as when a baby escapes the watch of a neglectful babysitter, prompting Tom and Jerry to chase the infant and keep it safe. Despite their constant attacks on one another, they have always rescued each other's lives when they were actually in danger, with the exception of The Two Mouseketeers, which had an unusually gloomy conclusion.
