Université Abderrahmane Mira de Béjaia

The Universite Abderrahmane Mira de Béjaia was founded in 1983 with 205 students and claims to be one of the world's fastest-growing universities. While it took this Algerian institution until 1992 to become a university center, and until 1998 to become a university, it now has over 40,000 students in less than 30 years. The university was named after a native of the Béjaa province who died as a hero of Algeria's independence war in 1959.

Université Abderrahmane Mira de Béjaia offers classes in French, Arabic, and Tamazaght (also known as Berber), reflecting Algeria's multilingualism. It has been offering Tamazaght courses since 1991, and its students have been among the most dedicated language rights activists.

The university is located in the Mediterranean seaport city whose wax industry and Francophone nickname – bougie – gave rise to the French word for candle. It is divided into two campuses, each of which houses more than 30 research laboratories.

The Targa Ouzemmour campus houses technology, exact sciences, natural and life sciences, and the medical school, while the Abouau campus, which opened in 2003 on the road between Béjaa and Tichy, houses the faculties of law, economics, management and commerce, and arts and languages. Berchiche is constructing a third campus.

It aims to combine "sustainable development...in harmony with globalisation's challenges," and it houses research centers for Innovation and Technology Transfer and Food Technology. As the leading Algerian university in the 2018 Nature Index, it has been one of four Algerian participants in the Erasmus SATELIT project, of which two are universities, aimed at developing the innovation ecosystems of higher education institutions in the Maghreb region.
