University for Development Studies
The University for Development Studies in Tamale was founded by the Ghanaian government in 1992 with the goal of speeding the development of Ghana's three northern regions at the time (the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions). The late President Jerry John Rawlings was instrumental in its formation, donating $50,000 from his coveted World Food Prize money as seed money. It was established as a multi-campus university. It is Ghana's sixth public university to open its doors. This is a departure from the traditional model of institutions with central campuses and administrations. It was designed with the three northern Ghanaian regions in mind. The Northern Region, Upper East Region, and Upper West Region are the three. It consists of four campuses, eight faculties, a business school, a medical school, a graduate school, an institute, and three centers.
The motto of this university is "Knowledge for Service," and it uses an excellent teaching methodology. Their in-depth and influential research and outreach initiatives have enabled them climb the ranks to become one of Ghana's top ten colleges.
The University for Development Studies has worked to solve the socio-economic and environmental issues that plague many sections of Ghana, particularly rural areas, since its foundation. External academic groups such as the Association of African Universities have memberships and connections with the high institution (AAU).
