University of Calgary

The University of Calgary is a Canadian public research university in Calgary, Alberta. The University of Calgary began in 1944 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, which was founded in 1908, before becoming a separate, autonomous university in 1966. It is made up of 14 faculties and more than 85 research institutes and centers. The main campus is in the city's northwest quadrant, near the Bow River, and a smaller south campus is in the city center.


The University of Calgary, founded in 1966, is located in the city of Calgary, in the province of Alberta, and is ranked tenth in Canada and between the 201st and 250th in the world. The university has a network of over 160,000 alumni and attracts approximately 30,000 students, 3,000 of whom are international students from approximately 125 countries. The University of Calgary is primarily a research university with 50 institutes and centers. In 2007, a secondary campus opened in Doha, Qatar.


Engineering, commerce, dance, and kinesiology are among the notable programs. Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is a distinguished alumnus, as is astronaut Robert Thirsk, who holds the Canadian record for the longest space flight and the most time spent in space.
