University of Coimbra

The Institution of Coimbra is a world-renowned Portuguese public university located in Coimbra, Portugal. It was founded in Lisbon in 1290 and moved several times until settling permanently in Coimbra in 1537. The university is one of the world's oldest continuously operating universities, as well as the oldest in Portugal, and it has had a significant impact on the development of higher education in the Portuguese-speaking world. [2] The university was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2013, citing its architecture, distinctive culture and traditions, and historical significance. [2]

The modern university is divided into eight faculties, each of which awards bachelor's (licenciado), master's (mestre), and doctorate (doutor) degrees in almost every major area. It was a founding member of the Coimbra Group of European research universities, which was created in 1985. It is one of Portugal's most global colleges, with over 20,000 students, more than 15% of them are abroad. Lus de Cames, Portugal's national poet, Pedro Nunes, several statesmen, prime ministers, and presidents of Portugal, as well as Nobel Prize laureate António Egaz Moniz, are among Coimbra's graduates.
