The University of Porto (“Universidade de Porto”) is the second largest Portuguese university in terms of student population. The Provisional Government of the First Portuguese Republic issued a proclamation on March 22, 1911, establishing the University of Porto. While the university's forerunners include the Nautical Academy, founded by King Joseph I in 1762, and the Drawing and Sketching Academy, founded by Queen Mary I in 1779, the university was to be primarily based on nineteenth-century higher education institutions, such as the Polytechnic Academy (1836–1911) and the Medical-Surgical Academy of Porto (1836–1911).

The University of Aveiro is a public university in the Portuguese city of Aveiro that also offers polytechnic education. It was founded in 1973 and currently has over 12,500 students enrolled in 58 graduate, 40 master's, and 25 doctoral programs, which are organized into departments and independent sections with specialized faculties.
