University of Medicine, Mandalay
The University of Medicine, Mandalay, formerly the Institute of Medicine, Mandalay, is one of Myanmar's five medical schools. The institution provides bachelor's degrees in medicine and surgery (M.B.B.S.) as well as graduate degrees in medical science (diploma, master's, and doctoral). Medical schools remain the top choice among prospective college students in Myanmar, and the University of Medicine, Mandalay is one of the most selective colleges in the country. About 300 students are admitted each year based purely on their Basic Education High School (college admission) exam scores.
Since 1955, the university has been at its current location in Chanayethazan. In 1991, the current building complex was finished. Since its inception, the Mandalay General Hospital (MGH) and the Mandalay Workers' Hospital have served as the university's primary teaching hospitals. The university now operates a 300-bed Teaching Hospital, five specialty hospitals downtown Mandalay, and five regional general hospitals throughout the city, for a total of 13 hospitals.
The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates has accredited the university.
