  1. The University of Yangon, located in Kamayut, Yangon, is the oldest and the best university in Myanmar's contemporary education system. The institution primarily offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, and law (Bachelor's, Master's, Post-graduate Diploma, and Doctorate). Following the 1996 student demonstrations, full-time bachelor's degrees were not provided at the university's main campus. From 2014 onwards, the bachelor's degree was re-offered to the finest students in the country. Undergraduate students can now pursue degrees in Political Science, as well as postgraduate certificates in fields including social work and geology.

Initially, Yangon University was the only significant university in the country. All institutes of higher education in Myanmar were under Yangon University until 1958, when Mandalay University became an autonomous university. All professional colleges and institutes of the university, such as the Institute of Medicine 1, Rangoon Institute of Technology, and Yangon Institute of Economics, became independent universities after the University Education Act of 1964, leaving Yangon University to focus on liberal arts, sciences, and law. In Myanmar, multiple ministries are responsible for higher education. The Ministry of Education is responsible for the University of Yangon.

Throughout its history, Yangon University has been a hotbed of civil unrest. Rangoon University was the starting point for all three national strikes against the British authority (1920, 1936, and 1938). General Aung San, U Nu, Ne Win, and U Thant, leaders of the Burmese independence movement, are among the university's noteworthy alumni. In the post-colonial era, student protests at the institution continued—in 1962, 1974, 1988, and 1996.

  2. The sole agricultural university in Myanmar is Yezin Agricultural University (YAU), which is located in Yezin. Mawlamyine and Hlegu have significant campuses, whereas Aungpan, Hmawbi, Kyaukse, Magway, and Phyu have minor regional campuses. The institution, which is run by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, primarily offers a four-year Bachelor of Agricultural Science (BAgrSc) program, as well as a few master's and PhD programs. Each year, YAU generates around 200 graduates, both bachelors and postgraduates. The university has already produced more than 9000 bachelors degree holders together with number of postgraduate degrees up to 2012.

Until 2006, the primary criterion for admission to YAU were college matriculation exam scores and Burmese citizenship. Since 2006, admission criteria have been based on a university-administered entrance examination. High school graduates must pass the English and biology entrance exams, as well as an interview. A total of 30 third-year students are selected from a pool of elite students who have earned a Diploma in Agriculture from one of the State Agricultural Institutes.
