Utse Restaurant
Utse, an authentically furnished restaurant in Kathmandu's downtown Thamel neighborhood, is the place to go for a taste of traditional Nepalese and Tibetan food at one of the country's pioneering culinary businesses. Utse first opened its doors over 30 years ago, helping to establish Thamel as a cultural focus for tourists to the city. Since then, it has grown to include a 52-room hotel.
Since the restaurant's inception, a staff of skilled and loyal cooks has handled the kitchen, preparing delicacies such as Utse's specialty gacok, a hot pot-style meal comprised of a mix of meat, vegetables, mushrooms, and noodles kept blistering hot by lighted charcoal. Visitors enjoy the Nepalese specialty momos, which are dumplings loaded with meat or vegetables and a combination of spices, washed down with the Tibetan drink tongba, a hot millet-based alcoholic drink.
