Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan (Filipino: Pamantasang Ateneo de Cagayan; Spanish: Universidad Ateneo de Cagayan), often known as the Ateneo de Cagayan or Xavier, is a private research, basic, and higher education institution sponsored by the Society of Jesus in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental. It was founded in 1933 as the Ateneo de Cagayan and was the first higher education institution in Mindanao to be granted university status a year before its sister school, the Ateneo de Manila. It was given its current name in honor of St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit missionary.
The university provides basic and secondary education, as well as undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts, social sciences, engineering, and business. Professional degrees are available through graduate institutions such as the Xavier Ateneo College of Law and the Jose P. Rizal School of Medicine.
The institution bestowed honorary degrees to prominent persons such as the late President Carlos P. Garcia and late President Corazon Aquino. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, who was designated one of the "Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the World" by The Australian, was among those honored by the institution. Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr. is among the university's prominent alumni.
The university was named to the Quacquarelli Symonds Asia University Rankings alongside 14 other universities in the Philippines. It is recognized as one of the country's top-ranked private universities, having a very selective admissions process.
