Top 15 Best Books On Chemistry
Chemistry is critical to our understanding of life, the universe, and the prospects for a better future. According to physicist Richard Feynman, if all ... read more...scientific knowledge were destroyed in a cataclysm and only one sentence was passed down to the next generation, the statement that would contain the most information in the fewest words would be "all things are made of atoms." Toplist believes this is the heart of chemistry, or something close to it. As a result, Toplist has developed a list of the best books on chemistry.

Alex Epstein is an energy expert and the creator of the Center for Industrial Progress, an alternative to the green movement that is positive and pro-human. His New York Times bestseller book, The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels, has been generally acclaimed as the most compelling argument yet presented for our continued use of fossil fuels, earning Epstein The McLaughlin Group's "Most Original Thinker of 2014" award.
For more than a decade, philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein has predicted that any negative effects of fossil fuel use on our climate will be outweighed by the unique benefits of fossil fuels to human flourishing, including their unparalleled ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to billions of people worldwide, particularly the world's poorest people.
And, contrary to what we hear from "experts" in the media about today's "renewable revolution" and "climate emergency," reality has proven Epstein correct:
- Fact: Fossil fuels remain the world's major source of energy and are rising rapidly, while much-touted renewables are generating skyrocketing electricity bills and increased blackouts.
- Fact: Fossil-fueled industrialization has reduced global poverty to historic lows.
- Fact: While fossil fuels have contributed to 1 degree of warming over the last 170 years, climate-related mortality have reached an all-time low as a result of fossil-fueled development.
What will the future bring? In Fossil Future, Epstein applies his distinctive "human flourishing paradigm" to the most recent research to reach the startling conclusion that the benefits of fossil fuels will continue to outweigh their drawbacks, including climatic implications, for future generations. Epstein contends that the route to global human flourishing is a combination of burning more fossil fuels, improving "climate mastery," and developing "energy freedom" laws that allow nuclear and other truly promising alternatives to fulfill their full long-term potential.
As mentioned, fossil fuels remain the world's primary source of energy and are rapidly increasing. The compounds in fossil fuels only react when they come into contact with other heat sources. When exposed to heat, the hydrocarbon chain turns the heat energy contained in the fossil fuel to electrical energy, which is then converted to mechanical energy and used to power the engines. When the hydrocarbons in the fossil fuel are burned, they produce energy. The heat used to burn fossil fuels causes carbon and hydrogen molecules to react, producing a tremendous amount of energy. People employ the creation of this new energy for a variety of objectives. For example, when you put gas in your automobile, the engine burns the gasoline and transfers the energy created by the combustion of fossil fuel to mechanical energy, resulting in the vehicle moving forward. When fossil fuels are burned, carbon and hydrogen molecules react, producing a large amount of energy and heat. People burned a lot of coal and used the heat it created to power generators, which produced electricity.
Fossil Future will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the future of our energy use, environment, and climate. It is thoroughly researched and wide-ranging.

This beautifully constructed, stunningly illustrated compendium explores the folklore and history of our most deadly plants.
Poisonings have been responsible for some of the most dramatic and renowned deaths in both history and fiction. It's a concealed and premeditated crime that requires advance planning and could go unnoticed for centuries. But there is a thin border between healing and killing: the only difference is in the dosage! Fez Inkwright returns to folkloric and historical archives in Botanical Curses & Poisons to explore the interesting, undiscovered stories behind a range of poisonous plants, witching herbs, and funghi. From apple (think of the poisoned fruit in "Snow White") to the hallucinogenic angel's trumpet to laurel, which emits toxic gases, to oleander (a dangerous attractive shrub), she covers it all, with each plant elegantly depicted by the author herself.
This fascinating resource is jam-packed with knowledge, lore, and the revealed mysteries of commonplace flora, including the prevalence of poisoning in ancient Rome, its usage in religion and magic, and popular antidotes, making it ideal for gardeners, writers, folklorists, witches, and scientists alike!

Sam Kean is the New York Times bestselling author of Caesar's Last Breath, The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons, The Disappearing Spoon, and The Violinist's Thumb, all of which were selected top scientific books of the year by Amazon.
His writing has appeared in the New Yorker, the Atlantic, the New York Times Magazine, Psychology Today, Slate, Mental Floss, and other journals, and he has appeared on NPR's "Radiolab," "All Things Considered," and "Fresh Air."
In The Disappearing Spoon, one of the best books on chemistry, The Periodic Table tells extraordinary stories of science, history, finance, mythology, the arts, medicine, and more, as told by New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean.
What was Gandhi's aversion to iodine (I, 53)? How did radium (Ra, 88) almost destroy Marie Curie's reputation? And why is gallium (Ga, 31) so popular with laboratory pranksters? Gallium is a moldable metal that melts around 84 degrees Fahrenheit, while being solid at ambient temperature. Making gallium spoons, serving them with tea, and seeing visitors recoil as their utensils vanish is a classic science prank.
The Periodic Table is a triumph of science, but it's also a treasure mine of adventure, treachery, and passion. These enthralling stories follow each element on the table as they play out their roles in human history and the lives of the (often) insane scientists who discovered them. From the Big Bang to the end of time, The Disappearing Spoon expertly blends science with the old tale of innovation, research, and discovery.
The Disappearing Spoon was a runner-up for the Royal Society of London's book of the year in 2010, and The Violinist's Thumb and The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons were both nominated for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award in 2013, and the AAAS/Subaru SB&F prize in 2015.

Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin was an American medicinal chemist, biochemist, organic chemist, pharmacologist, psychopharmacologist, and novelist who died on June 2, 2014. He is credited with introducing MDMA ("ecstasy", "mandy", or "molly") to psychologists for psychopharmaceutical use in the late 1970s, as well as the discovery, synthesis, and personal bioassay of approximately 230 psychoactive chemicals for their psychedelic and entactogenic potential.
Ann Shulgin and her husband, Sasha Shulgin, co-founded Transform Press in 1991 out of a shared enthusiasm and commitment to an unfiltered investigation of psychoactive chemicals. They co-wrote and published PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story (1991) and TiHKAL: The Continuation (1997), two cult classics based on their psychedelic experiences, through the Press.
PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story by Alexander and Ann Shulgin has become a foundational work in the genre and was the first book to fully impart the how-to chemistry, as well as convey the effects, of many of the entheogenic drugs that are currently being studied and used to heal trauma and deal with death. The book, an abbreviation for "Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved," spans autobiography, organic chemistry, politics, ethnobotany, and psychopharmacology, and its cultural impact will undoubtedly be tremendous for decades to come, as it has already been.
The first section of PiHKAL is a fictitious autobiographical 'novel' - the key fabrication is that it is fiction. The first half of the book is titled The Love Story, and it follows two people named Shura and Alice as they fall in love, despite the fact that one of them is already in love with someone else. This love triangle is a horrible agony they must endure, and the reader witnesses the process with grace and deep insight into human nature. Shura is a talented chemist who has dedicated his career to creating psychoactive chemicals; in the story, they have several experiences with the psychedelic compounds that Shura has found and manufactured in his lab, all of which he has bioassayed himself. The reader will find oneself accompanying them on this journey, experiencing what they have experienced, both in their emotions and in their psychedelic journeys.
The Chemical Story, the second half of PiHKAL, offers explicit directions for, and effects of, the synthesis of 179 psychedelic phenethylamines, the majority of which were discovered by Shulgin himself. There contains information on the synthesis of each chemical, as well as indicated effective dosage, duration, and thorough discussion on the subjective effects that were experienced. This book appeals to adults of all ages and cultures, as well as to both expert and inexperienced psychedelic users.

Neil Nathan, MD, has been a Board Certified Family Physician in practice for 47 years. As he studied and learnt about many alternative philosophies, his work shifted toward mostly assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals who had not been assisted by conventional medicine. He published "On Hope and Healing: For Those Who Have Fell Through The Medical Cracks" to teach both patients and doctors how to do this.
Millions of people suffer from chronic illnesses caused by environmental pollutants and infectious organisms such as mold and Borrelia, which causes Lyme disease. Because the symptoms of these illnesses are so varied and strange, many of these people have sought medical attention only to be disregarded, as if their problems are "all in their heads." Many (if not most) people have attempted to fight it out and carry on with no hope of improvement. Their ailments, unfortunately, are extremely genuine. Toxic is a book of hope for these people, their loved ones, and the doctors who care for them. Dr. Neil Nathan has spent many years helping thousands of patients restore their health (even after their previous doctors had given up on them), and has come to understand some of the most frequent causes of these chronic illnesses, allowing for the application of more precise and effective treatments.
The purpose of Toxic is to shed light on these complex conditions so that suffering patients and their families can receive the assistance they require. Inside, you will find:
- Information on how severe sensitivity and toxicity emerge in the body, how sensitivity and toxicity differ, and how they frequently overlap
- Detailed descriptions of the five principal causes of severe sensitivity and toxicity: mold, Bartonella (a Lyme disease co-infection), mast cell activation, porphyria, and carbon monoxide poisoning.
- An outline of Dr. Robert Naviaux's innovative cell danger response concept, which explains how the body becomes "stuck" battling a threat even after the threat has passed.
- A system-by-system method for "rebooting" the body in order to break the cycle of illness and allow healing to begin;
- Information on managing with stress and accepting an emotional and/or spiritual awakening on the path to wellness.

Nick Lane is a University College London evolutionary biology professor and the author of five books. He lives in London, England, and is the codirector of UCL's Centre for Life's Origins and Evolution (CLOE).
What gives birth to the Earth and ends our lives?
For decades, the study of genetic information has dominated biology. Information is valuable, but it is only one component of what keeps us alive. Our living metabolic network is also passed down from generation to generation, all the way back to the beginning of life. In Transformer, biochemist Nick Lane exposes a hidden scientific renaissance: how the same fundamental chemistry gives rise to life and causes our demise.
Lane is among a group of scientists who are wondering why the Krebs cycle, the "perfect circle" at the center of metabolism, is still so elusive more than eighty years after it was discovered. Transformer is Lane's journey as a scientist to discover the inner meaning of the Krebs cycle and why it is still at the heart of life and death today.
Lane illustrates the beautiful, violent world within our cells, where hydrogen atoms are extracted from food carbon skeletons and fed to the insatiable beast of oxygen. However, this identical cycle, when reversed, provided the molecular building components that allowed life to arise on our planet. It now does both. How can the same pathway be both creative and destructive? What can we learn by studying the Krebs cycle about the mysteries of aging and the most difficult subject of all, consciousness?
Transformer connects the tale of our planet to the story of our cells, explaining what makes us who we are and how it relates to the origin of life. Transformer, enlivened by Lane's ability for simplifying and humanizing difficult research, is a must-read for anybody captivated by biology's major riddles. Life is fundamentally a chemical phenomenon: this is its fundamental logic.
