This course introduces Balinese music and the significance of music in Balinese culture. Students will learn about and witness Balinese performances, as well as begin learning and practicing the rhythms and methods of Balinese gamelan online using the "Jamelan" game. The "Jamelan" game, created by MIT Professor of Practice Eran Egozy, uses rhythm recognition software similar to that seen in "rhythm-based" video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, both of which Egozy created. Learners' progress is recorded and measured using the Jamelan, which allows them to play along while hearing and measuring their accuracy both audibly and digitally. The resulting learning experience is potent because it combines hands-on pedagogical tools based on traditional Balinese teaching techniques with new digital tools based on the gaming industry.
Learners may explore these rhythmic patterns in a personalized way by going through activities that enhance their listening and musicianship abilities, in addition to seeing and hearing them directly and learning about the cultural context of these approaches. Learners may loop, repeat, alter speeds, and so on, creating a far more personalized experience that adapts to various people and allows them to practice at their own pace. The amount of precision in playing along with these patterns, playing the rhythms, and, finally, playing complementing portions, is the basis for testing. What you'll learn:
- Increased awareness of the richness of Balinese musical traditions
- Concepts and techniques of rhythm and metric structure
- Deeper understanding of musical cultures in their own right and in their cultural contexts, as well as a larger cross-cultural awareness
- Improvement of fundamental musical skills, which can be applied to any form of music
