  2. The second-best institution in our list of best universities in Mozambique is the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM). The idea for the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) arose during the peace talks between Frelimo and Renamo in Rome. The discussions remained stuck in June 1992, therefore the mediator, Dom Jaime Pedro Gonçalves, Archbishop of Beira, proposed establishing an excellent university for Mozambique's center and north. The Catholic Church committed to address Maputo's disproportionate concentration of higher education institutions. This resulted in the signing of the peace treaty between Frelimo and Renamo on October 4, 1992.

The Catholic University of Mozambique was formed in 1995 as a commitment to peace and reconciliation, as an institutional compromise (Boletim da Repblica, Decreto N° 43/95, September 14). UCM inaugurated its initial faculties in Beira and Nampula in August 1996.

The University acknowledges a firm inspiration on the ideals of Christian civilisation in its foundations; to achieve its duty, it transcends not only national geographical extent, but also linguistic and ideological boundaries. It is a community that seeks information in order to plan concrete social, cultural, and economic growth for Mozambique, as well as scientific, technical, and moral advancement. The Catholic University of Mozambique is deeply committed to the community. It serves the common good by promoting community development and the complete development of men and women. It also encourages communication, fairness, and peace.

UCM now has six faculties spread over four provinces:
Faculty of Economics and Management (Beira)
    Faculty of Law (Nampula)
Faculty of Education and Communication (Nampula)
    Faculty of Agriculture (Cuamba)
    Faculty of Health Sciences (Beira)
Faculty of Tourism Management and Information Technology (Pemba)

    UCM
has developed research centers in Nampula (Konrad Adenauer Research Center), Beira (Centre for Geographic Information, GEA-Consult, Medical Research Center), and Chimoio (Study and Research Center), as well as a distance education center for teacher education in Beira. UCM established faculty delegations in Chimoio (Economics, Law), Nampula (Economics), Beira (Information Technology), Tete (Economics), and Quelimane as part of its objective to deliver higher education to the people (Information Technology and Law).

Each faculty has a faculty board that includes the dean, pedagogical director, and administrator. Only directors work in centers. The rector, vice-rector finance and administration, academic affairs and development, human resources department, and public relations department are all located at the rectory office.

Consolidate and strengthen its position as a center of excellence in advancing knowledge and technical innovation, scientific research activities, service supply and Extension, and involvement in the country's, region's, and world's economic, ethical, and social development. UCM aspires to be regarded as a national, regional, and international reference university in terms of the vitality, innovation, quality, and excellence of its courses, scientific research activities, and community services.

The mission of UCM, which is based on Christian Catholic principles, is to develop and disseminate scientific knowledge and culture, as well as to promote and provide holistic and quality training to all citizens and professionals who are committed to Mozambican and global life and sustainable development through various fields of knowledge.

Among its research activities will be a study of serious contemporary problems such as the dignity of human life, the promotion of justice for all, the quality of personal and family life, the protection of nature, the search for peace and political stability, a more equitable distribution of the world's resources, and a new economic and political order that will better serve the human community on a national and international level. University study will strive to uncover the foundations and causes of today's significant challenges, with a focus on their ethical and religious components.

  4. The Pedagogical University (UP), a public higher education school run by the government of Mozambique, is also one of the best universities to study in Mozambique. It was the first and is the only public institution in the country entirely dedicated to teacher education. The Pedagogical University plays an essential role in the education system of the country. Teaching is of the greatest caliber, and the educational process adheres to worldwide norms.

The UP has its headquarters and main campus in Maputo, as well as delegations in all provinces. The Pedagogical University (UP) was established in 1985 as the Higher Pedagogical Institute (ISP) by ministerial directive no. 73/85, issued on December 4, as an institution dedicated to the training of teachers at all levels of the National Education System (SNE) and educational personnel. The institution was founded in the facilities of the General Preparatory School Joaquim José Machado in Maputo.

The Beira Delegation began operations in 1989, utilizing the facilities of the then-Patrice Lumumba Commercial School. The ISP therefore becomes the country's first higher education institution to have a campus outside of the capital.

Also in 1995, 10 years after the institution's founding, the ISP was elevated to the university category under the name Pedagogical University, with the ratification of the statutes and the backing of Presidential Decree 13/95, issued on April 25, 1995.
