  1. Vietnam National University, Hanoi, established in 1906, is a direct descendent of the colonial-era Universite de Indochine.

    It is "one of two main interdisciplinary and multisectoral institutions, tasked with creating highly competent human resources for the rest of the country," together with Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City. They are run differently than the rest of Vietnam's higher education system, reporting directly to the prime minister rather than the education minister, and have more autonomy.


    With the merging of the University of Hanoi, the College of Foreign Languages, and the Hanoi National Union of Education in 1993, Vietnam National University, Hanoi took on its current name and shape. It is organized into 12 universities, as well as two specialized schools for students with remarkable abilities in languages and natural sciences.

    The university's two training and research centers are dedicated to national defense and security, as well as physical education and sports. At the 2019 Academic Olympiad, high school students received medals in math, biology, and physics. The Vietnam National University, Hanoi has six campuses, the largest of which is located in Xuan Thuy.

  2. Hanoi University of Science and Technology, founded in 1956, is Vietnam's oldest and largest technical university. It was built in buildings previously used by Indochina (now Vietnam National) University, gave rise to the Universities of Civil Engineering and Mining and Geology, and dispatched faculty to reconstruct Ho Chi Minh City University of Science and Technology when the Vietnam War ended.

    Five of its presidents have also served as education and/or science ministers or deputy ministers. Although it was renamed Hanoi University of Science and Technology in English in 2010, it has preserved its Vietnamese name of Dai hoc Bach khoa Ha Noi (HUT) as well as the French Institut Polytechnique de Hanoi.


    It declares a "commitment to human development, high-quality workforce training, scientific research, technological innovation, and knowledge transfer that serves our country and global society," describing itself as "a multidisciplinary research university in which scientific research is the main force."

    Admission is extremely hard, with 33,000 applicants competing for 6,680 spots in June 2019. The Elitech scheme, which incorporates the 5-year Excellent Engineer Training Programmes resulting in a French CTI qualification, benefits the most talented students.


    Food technology, dynamic engineering, biotechnology, and biological sciences are among the eight multidisciplinary research strengths highlighted by the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. It has eight National Key Laboratories and was placed second in Vietnam's Nature index for 2018-9.

  3. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) is one of Vietnam's premier technological universities. HCMUT, with a 63-year existence, has remained the largest, most famous, and oldest engineering institution in Southern Vietnam. The institution actively cultivates talents and provides human resources with excellent technical abilities that are acknowledged as equivalent to those of other advanced Southeast Asian countries.


    HCMUT has become a brand name for innovation and excellence, consistently impressing its partners with one of the highest employment rates in Vietnam. It is also considered an important research excellence center that significantly contributes to technology transfer operations in Southern Vietnam.


    The institution provides a diverse range of training programs, including undergraduate (full-time, part-time, and second-degree bachelor of engineering) and postgraduate degrees (master's and doctoral programs). HCMUT has 1,163 employees and 26,278 students enrolled in 11 faculties, the majority of which focus on engineering, architecture, and industrial management. HCMUT has so far developed 15 foreign undergraduate programs and 6 international master's programs that are entirely taught in English.

  4. Hanoi University of Mining and Geology is Vietnam's main institution for geology, mining, surveying and mapping, as well as oil and gas exploration and production. Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, founded in 1966, has educated almost 80,000 engineers, masters, and PhDs. Many of them have progressed to positions of power in the country.

  5. The University of Danang (UD), founded in 1994, is presently the largest in Central Vietnam. UD is a multi-level, multi-disciplinary university with significant strengths in Engineering, Technology, Economics, Education, and Foreign Languages. It is made up of 11 member universities and linked training units.

Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) was established in 1995 by the government to create a training center for undergraduate, postgraduate, and science research, using high-quality and innovative multidisciplinary technology. It is located in the eastern part of HCMC, Vietnam's most developed urban area. VNUHCM serves as the foundation of the higher education system, focusing on the needs of socio-economic growth.


    VNUHCM is one of Vietnam's major educational institutions, with a total area of 643.7hectar developed in a contemporary university city style.   7. Hanoi Medical University, founded in 1902, is a non-profit public higher-education school located in the enormous metropolis of Hanoi, Red River Delta. Hanoi Medical University (HMU), which is officially recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, is a medium-sized coeducational Vietnamese higher education institution.

  8. National Economics University (NEU) was one of the first universities established by the government of North Vietnam during the time of recovery following the triumph over French colonial rule. The university was once known as the University of Economy and Finance before being renamed Planning Economics University. Since 1985, the term National Economics University has been used officially and will continue to be used now.


    This school is regarded as the top university in economics in North Vietnam, with the main goal of not only training students in economic knowledge but also advising the government on macroeconomic policies and conducting research on economic management, particularly on international economic subjects. NEU currently has approximately 45,000 students enrolled, as well as 1228 lecturers and staff members, including 113 professors and vice-professors, 255 physicians, and 391 Masters.


    Many of the National Economics University's alumni have a proven track record of accomplishment and hold key positions in both the public and commercial sectors. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the current President of Vietnam, is an alumnus.

  10. The origins of the Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE) can be traced back to 1945 when President Ho Chi Minh established the Philology University Committee. The University was formally formed on October 11, 1951, with the mission of training teachers of various levels.
