  5. Royal Holloway was founded in 1879 and became a constituent institution of the University of London in 1900. It is located in Surrey, just outside of the UK capital. The Founder's Building, which was finished in 1881 and was inspired by the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley, was designed by William Henry Crossland and inspired by the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley, France.


    It is still one of the most spectacular academic structures in the UK, and it has been featured in a number of films and television shows, most recently the iconic Downton Abbey. In the latest QS World University Rankings, Royal Holloway is placed joint 308th in the world.

  6. Queen's University Belfast is Northern Ireland's top-ranked university, ranking 209th in the world. It was established in 1849, with origins in the previous Royal Belfast Academical Institution, which was established in 1810 and is regarded as one of the UK's ten oldest institutions.


    The red-brick gothic Lanyon Building, which opened in 1849 and is named for its architect, Charles Lanyon, is the campus's focal point.

  8. The Institution of St Andrews, founded between 1410 and 1413, is Scotland's oldest university. St Andrew's now has around 11,000 students enrolled. The institution is consistently ranked in the top 100 in worldwide rankings, which is consistent with its slogan, "Ever to achieve." Among the numerous well-known alumni of St Andrews University are B. C. Forbes (founder of Forbes magazine) and Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton.

Aberystwyth University regained its independence when the University of Wales restructured in 2007. Prince Charles is one of its prominent graduates.
