University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow was established in 1451 as an outgrowth of the city's cathedral. Today, over 27,000 students have the opportunity to study at one of the world's top 100 institutions. The University of Glasgow has produced several prominent graduates throughout the ages, including economist Adam Smith, inventor and engineer James Watt, and, more recently, actor Gerard Butler, best-selling novelist John Niven, and Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Moving north from Durham, the University of Glasgow is recognized as one of Scotland's four "old universities," together with Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and St Andrews. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive institutions and was a driving force in the Scottish Enlightenment.

The institution moved to its current location in 1870, with Sir George Gilbert Scott's beautiful main building completed in 1886. In the QS Globe University Rankings 2021, it is placed joint 77th in the world.
