The University of Cambridge's history is intertwined with that of its main competitor, the University of Oxford (see below): When a number of Oxford pupils were forced to leave due to disagreements with the local inhabitants, a group of them relocated to Cambridge and founded a new school in 1209. Cambridge went on to become one of the world's top and most important institutions.
