Assateague Island
is a 37-mile-long barrier island off the Delmarva Peninsula's eastern shore, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Maryland owns the northern two-thirds of the island, while Virginia owns the southern third. The majority of Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park is located in Maryland. The Virginia part includes Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and a one-mile length of property controlled by the National Park Service that has a lifeguarded recreational beach and interpretive amenities.
