Assateague Island National Seashore

Assateague Island National Seashore, about 10 miles south of Ocean City, is notable for several reasons: It is home to herds of gorgeous wild horses and provides a variety of activities to view the shoreline, including hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and simply wandering along the beach. At Assateague Island National Seashore, camping in trailers, recreational vehicles, or tents is also popular. Picnic tables and fire pits are available in several of the campground locations, excellent for toasting s'mores with the family. This Maryland vacation spot will appeal to adventurers searching for family-friendly outdoor activities as well as a large beach.

Assateague Island is a 37-mile-long barrier island off the Delmarva Peninsula's eastern shore, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Maryland owns the northern two-thirds of the island, while Virginia owns the southern third. The majority of Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park is located in Maryland. The Virginia part includes Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and a one-mile length of property controlled by the National Park Service that has a lifeguarded recreational beach and interpretive amenities. The Assateague Lighthouse, herds of wild horses, and beautiful beaches are its most well-known features. Toms Cove is one of the many marshes, bays, and coves found on the island.
