Bacchus, Volume 1
Eddie Campbell is a pioneering giant in the realm of independent literary comics, deserving of a position among Eisner, Spiegelman, and McCloud. However, unlike The Spirit, Maus, and Understanding Comics, his work is rarely, if ever, distributed to direct market comic stores and booksellers.
Bacchus was Sandman before Sandman, an academically oriented continuous series built around sporadically related vignettes portraying a deity who regales the reader with retellings of ancient mythology that first appeared in 1987. Campbell demonstrates in these books his profound grasp of graphic storytelling and eye for innovating the form, while delivering clever and, ultimately, fun reimaginings of classic literature, illustrated with simple, yet evocative black and white inking combined with several multimedia compositions.
