Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales
Blacksad is considered the pinnacle achievement of Spanish comics. The universe of Blacksad, created in 2000 by Juan Daz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, portrays an indescribably rich texture of Americana as viewed through the lens of seamless animal anthropomorphism reproduced flawlessly by Guarnido's inks and paints.
The occasionally whimsical and oftentimes harrowing circumstances and artwork presented by Canales and Guarnido hold up a mirror to the dark underbelly of American history, while simultaneously depicting it in a fantasy world where the issues of yesteryear are clear-cut moral battles to be waged and won by square-jawed P.I.s and intrepid reporters not afraid to get their hands dirty. Blacksad was collected in its full for the first time in English in 2020, yet it is still difficult to locate in American comic shops, making it an immediate buy for the discriminating collector.
