Bennington
Bennington is a town in the United States' Bennington County, Vermont. It is one of the county's two shire towns (county seats), the other being Manchester. Bennington is a historically significant town with several 18th- and 19th-century structures, as well as plenty of greenery in season. The Bennington Battle Monument, a massive obelisk protruding into the sky that honors the achievements of the Green Mountain Boys, who fought effectively for the Revolutionaries during the American War of Independence, dominates the city's skyline. The Green Mountain Boys were also able to make a successful case for Vermont to be admitted as a distinct state from New York by doing so, and they were accepted as the 14th state in 1791. The city has a long history of manufacturing, primarily in the wood processing industry. The town is also well-known for its ceramics, ironwork, and textiles.
Bennington has everything you'd expect in a small Vermont town: a strong arts community, a rich history, and easy access to outdoor sports. The picturesque Main Street is lined with sidewalk cafes and locally-owned boutique shops, while the downtown Arts District is home to galleries, a theater, and outdoor performance spaces. This can be seen as one of the Best Day Trips from Vermont.
History aficionados should also see the Bennington Battle Monument, a stone obelisk that is also the state's tallest man-made landmark. Just outside of town, the 3.6-mile Harmon Hill Trail provides spectacular views of Bennington and the surrounding countryside.
