Montpelier

Montpelier, Vermont's state capital, may be the smallest in the country, but it's packed with historic charm and unique attractions. The Winooski River runs through the city center, adding to the attractiveness of its picturesque downtown, modest businesses, strolling trails, and cultural amenities.

Visit the gold-domed State House for a free tour; seek for the statue of Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen on the grounds and the Roman goddess Ceres atop the dome. The Vermont Historical Society Museum teaches visitors about the state's history. One of the nicest hikes in town is located behind the state house. For a wonderful perspective, ascend the steep, wooded hill to Hubbard Park and climb the roughly 1930 observation tower.

Maple syrup is synonymous with Vermont. Tour the farm and purchase a bottle of syrup from the gift store at Bragg Farm Sugarhouse & Gift Shop, which has been in the family for eight generations. The maple creamies, sometimes known as soft-serve ice cream elsewhere, are out of this world. Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, which is more than 200 years old, offers a farm life museum, woodshed theater, nature trail, and free maple syrup sampling.

Then, at the Lost Nation Theater, you can see a stage production, a concert by the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, or an indie film screening. Craft beer and food are big here, thanks to the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier. At one of the school's five eateries, you can sample delicacies prepared by student cooks. Browse the farmers market all year for speciality breads, cheeses, herbs, and handcrafted items. It can be considered as one of the Best Day Trips from Vermont.
