Boca de Inferno
Boca do Inferno (or Hell’s Mouth in English) is a blowhole along the southern coast of São Tomé just a few kilometers south of town and not far from Água Izé village. It’s an easy addition to a road trip on this side of the island and is quite spectacular when water rushes up through the rocky basalt inlets and spouts high above your head. The name is explained by the awe-inspiring noise of the sea, and it was in this dramatic scenery of high waves and caves that English magician Aleister Crowley faked his death in 1930 (only to reappear in Berlin three weeks later).
Visitors flock to this spot just a short drive south of the capital, to see as the salty whitecaps crash against the shore, and the currents draw water into a subterranean cave, all before they shoot sky-high like some marine geyser. The sight is something on its own; made all the better by the gorgeous black-rock cliffs and volcanic headlands jutting out and erupting from the coast all around.
