Porto Alegre
As a visitor, there isn't much to do in this tranquil fishing hamlet, but it's frequently included as a quick stop on the route to Praia Jalé during São Tomé day trips. Interesting crumbling structures, such as the old army barracks, offer fantastic photo possibilities, and it's an interesting view into what life is like for these coastal towns here on the islands. Porto Alegre is nothing like its Brazilian counterpart.
Instead of a million people, this one has a little more than 500. Porto Alegre is a ramshackle collection of earthy huts, stilted longhouses, and fading fishing boats, rather than countless barrios and expansive contemporary districts. Nonetheless, it has a lot of charm and is one of the starting sites for the São Tomé whale watching circuit (which runs the length of the east coast). It's also an excellent starting point for further adventures along the south shore's beautiful beaches - Jale, paradisiacal Praia Piscina – and the stunning stretches of Rolas Island.
