By Dawn's Early Light
The Grand Tour (also known as By Dawn's Early Light) is an HBO original film that premiered in 1990. It is based on William Prochnau's novel Trinity's Child, published in 1983. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, the film was one of the last to depict the events of a fictitious World War III.
During the Cold War, it was pretty typical for Hollywood to speculate on how World War III might play out. This conjecture resulted in comedy like "Doctor Strangelove," as well as a series of dramas depicting the mutually assured devastation of an American-Soviet confrontation. One of the last of these, "By Dawn's Early Light," with an all-star ensemble providing powerful performances, plays like a fascinating artifact of the USSR's last days.
