Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United and captains the Portugal national team. Ronaldo is widely recognized as one of the greatest players of all time, having won five Ballon d'Or trophies and four European Golden Shoes, the most ever by a European player. In his career, he has won 32 trophies, including seven league titles, five UEFA Champions Leagues, and the UEFA European Championship. Ronaldo has the marks for most Champions League appearances (183), goals (140), assists (42), goals in the European Championship (14), international goals (117), and international appearances by a European player (191). He is one of the only handful of players who have appeared in over 1,100 professional games and scored over 800 official senior career goals for the club and country.
Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal as an 18-year-old in 2003 and has since amassed over 190 caps, making him the country's most-capped player. He is also the nation's all-time leading scorer with nearly 100 international goals. Ronaldo scored his first international goal as Portugal advanced to the Euro 2004 final. He was selected captain of the national squad in July 2008. In 2015, the Portuguese Football Federation named Ronaldo the greatest Portuguese player of all time. The next year, he guided Portugal to its first major tournament victory, earning the Silver Boot as the tournament's second-highest goalscorer. He also led them to victory in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019, and he went on to win the Golden Boot as the best scorer at Euro 2020. Ronaldo, one of the world's most marketable and popular athletes, was named Forbes' highest-paid athlete in 2016 and 2017, and ESPN's most famous athlete from 2016 to 2019. In 2014, Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people. He is the first footballer and just the third athlete in history to earn $1 billion in his career.
