William Henry Gates III

William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate, software developer, investor, author, and philanthropist. He and his late childhood friend Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft. During his tenure at Microsoft, Gates held the offices of chairman, CEO, president, and chief software architect, as well as being the company's largest individual shareholder until May 2014. He was a key figure in the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. During the late 1990s, he was reprimanded for his anti-competitive business activities. This opinion has been supported by numerous court decisions. Since 1987, Gates has been on Forbes' list of the world's wealthiest people. Except for 2010 and 2013, he was the world's richest person every year from 1995 to 2017. In October 2017, he was eclipsed by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who had an estimated net worth of $90.6 billion at the time, compared to Gates' net worth of $89.9 billion. Gates has an estimated net worth of US$110 billion as of September 2022, making him the world's sixth richest person.

Since quitting Microsoft's day-to-day operations in 2008, Gates has pursued other corporate and social endeavors. He started and now serves as chairman of several companies, including BEN, Cascade Investment, bgC3, and TerraPower. Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the world's largest private foundation, he has made major contributions to a number of humanitarian organizations and scientific research endeavors. In the early twenty-first century, he oversaw a vaccine campaign that contributed significantly to the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa. Gates and Warren Buffett formed The Giving Pledge in 2010, in which they and other billionaires promised to contribute at least half of their fortunes to charity.
