Death Note
For manga fans around the globe, Death Note is Weekly Shonen Jump's popular horror and mystery manga. All 12 volumes were published in the mid-2000s. The story revolves around Yagami Raito, a high school student with the brains of a genius who stumbles upon a mysterious notebook from hell called "Death Note" - which was originally owned by the death god Ryuk. It gives the user the ability to kill anyone whose name is written in the notebook. Raito decides to use the Death Note to wage a global massacre against those he deems unworthy of dignity, with the aim of transforming the world into an ideal society free of crime evil.
As of May 2006, Death Note is the 6th best-selling manga series in Shueisha's publishing history with more than 15 million copies sold in Japan alone, of which volume 7 alone has sold about 1, 2 million copies. Japanese manga fans have voted Death Note as one of the ten best manga series of all time.
