Elisa & Marcela (2019)

Isabel Coixet directs Elisa & Marcela, a 2019 Spanish biographical love drama film. At the 69th Berlin International Film Festival, it was chosen to compete for the Golden Bear. It was released in select cinemas in Spain on May 24, 2019, and via Netflix on June 7, 2019.

The film centers around Elisa and Marcela, who meet and become friends while attending a Catholic school and tells the incredible real tale of Spain's first same-sex marriage. The friendship swiftly develops into a love relationship, and the pair expresses an interest in marrying one another in the future. Even though same-sex marriage is illegal, their love is simply too strong to give up, and they decide to be together by hook or by crook. Elisa devises a plot to disguise herself as a man and marry Marcela in a death-defying ceremony. Is love, on the other hand, ultimately victorious?
