What Did Jack Do? (2020)
David Lynch wrote and directed the black-and-white short film What Did Jack Do? in 2017. It opened at the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain in Paris on November 8, 2017. And it is released as a movie in 2020.
'What Did Jack Do?' is a humorous yet lovely short film about a detective investigating a homicide in a locked-down practice station. When the investigator comes across a talking capuchin monkey, he suspects it of committing homicide. As a result, he abandons other leads and interrogates the speaking cash, ending in a hilarious yet scary finale.
What Did Jack Do? is clearly and purposely low-fi, much like Lynch's first movie Eraserhead. Lynch artificially added specks of dirt to the frame to give it the feel of a long-lost midnight film that has spent the last several decades languishing in a long-forgotten projection booth somewhere. It was shot in a shimmering, grainy black-and-white, and Lynch artificially added specks of dirt to the frame to give it the feel of a long-lost midnight film that has spent the last several decades languishing in a long-forgotten projection Lynch, as a nameless investigator, interrogates Jack Cruz (billed as "himself") about his background at a mystifyingly under-sized diner table throughout the film. Jack is a brawler who refuses to comply. Lynch and Jack's talk finally turns to a chicken named Toototabon and how much Jack adored her. Lynch and his monkey, in particular, have something to conceal.
