Passing (2021)
Rebecca Hall's feature directorial debut, Passing, is a 2021 black-and-white drama film that she wrote, produced, and directed. The film is based on Nella Larsen's 1929 novel of the same name, and the title alludes to African-Americans who have skin that is pale enough to be mistaken for white and are referred to as "passing." Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, André Holland, Bill Camp, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and Alexander Skarsgard are among the cast members of the film.
'Passing,' set in 1920s New York, centers around estranged childhood friends Irene Redfield, a light-skinned black woman, and Clare Bellew, who seeks to pass as white. Irene discovers upon reuniting with Claire that she has married a white guy called John, who is prejudiced and abuses black people. Although John is initially uninformed of Clare's ethnic history, the latter chooses to re-involve herself in Irene's life, revealing her origin. John wants vengeance after being deceived, which leads to a disastrous finale that threatens to break the friendship once and for all.
