Flaming Gorge Reservoir

The Green River is dammed behind the Flaming Gorge Reservoir to form Wyoming's largest reservoir, Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The dam's construction started in 1958 and was finished in 1964. When measured at an elevation of 1,841 m above sea level, the reservoir has surface area of 42,020 acres.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, run by Ashley National Forest, offers visitors hiking, boating, fishing, windsurfing, camping, backpacking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. There are paid campsites near to the dam, along Highway 191, and free campsites all around the region. All U.S. Forest Service-run campgrounds close for the winter, with the exception of Dripping Springs near Dutch John.

Along Highway 530 on the west side of the reservoir, at the marinas at Buck Board and Lucerne, there are more public camping areas. Colorado River Cutthroat trout, Brown trout, Rainbow trout, Lake trout, Kokanee salmon, Smallmouth bass, Burbot, and Common carp are just a few of the numerous fish species that may be found in the reservoir and other lakes. Fishing is very common on the Green River, especially below the dam. The river's crystal-clear water and stunning structure make it a premier fly fishing stream.
