Yellowstone Lake
The largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park is Yellowstone Lake. The lake is 350 km2 in size and has 180 km of shoreline. It is 2,357 m above sea level. The lake has a 42 m average depth, although its maximum depth is at least 120 m. The largest freshwater lake in North America above 2,100 meters is Yellowstone Lake.
Camping areas, hiking paths, and a fishing bridge can be found at the northernmost point of Yellowstone Lake. Since the late 1800s, fishing for Yellowstone cutthroat trout has been a well-liked activity. Today, fishing is still permitted from June 15 to the first Sunday in November.
A well-liked activity on the lake is to join a one-hour guided boat excursion to take in the breathtaking and tranquil surroundings. Along the trails that surround the lake, canoeing, kayaking, and boating are also popular activities. In the winter, ice nearly 0.91 m thick covers most of the lake, with the exception of the shallow water that surrounds the hot springs. By early December, the lake freezes over, and it may stay frozen through late May or early June.
