Grotta Gigante
The vista from Grotta Gigante is breathtaking. It contains the world's largest natural hall, measuring 114 meters in height, 280 meters in length, and 76.3 meters in width. This is a massive formation that has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records since 1995. The fact that "Gigante" has become popular is not a coincidence. Many enormous stalactites and stalagmites, many of which are of extraordinary beauty, may be seen in the cave. The "dish-pile" look of the stalagmites is due to water falling from up to 80 meters (260 feet) above and depositing calcium carbonate over a large region.
Trieste is only 10 kilometers distant and is easily accessible by bus. Only by organizing a guided trip (more information here) is it possible to enter the cave, which offers a breathtaking view. Because of the incredible height from which the drops fall, its stalagmites are known for resembling heaps of dishes.
Grotta Gigante has been around for almost ten million years and is also the site of important scientific research. Many educational and sporting activities are held indoors. Indeed, you can climb on its magnificent calcareous stone cliffs in complete safety.
If you're looking for a great place to start your adventure in Friuli Venezia Giulia, B&B Alla Casetta is a great place to stay. This B&B, located away from the smog and only 15 minutes from the lovely Trieste promenade, serves organic meals and organizes a variety of ecotourism trips. It's also perfect for enogastronomic tourism.
A visit to the Speleological Scientific Museum about Grotta Gigante is required before visiting the cave. It is significant archeological and biological evidence of the territory's caves. Miramare Castle, a jewel of Trieste, is only a few kilometers from the cave.
