Iddo Island
Iddo Island is one of the bustling and beautiful islands in the city of Lagos. Iddo Island was once independent and positioned opposite the Lagos mainland, but due to landfill, it has been combined with the mainland. Iddo Island is home to the well-known Lagos Terminus. It is the first and only tram service in Nigeria, and it connects Lagos Island to the mainland through Carter Bridge. Aside from the Lagos Terminus, Iddo Island is home to a number of factories and manufacturing units, including the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
Iddo Island was colonized by Olofin Ogunfuminire and his companions, whose descendants still own and manage the island today. Lagos was built by the Awori in the 13th century. Lagos was formerly known as Eko, a Yoruba people|Yoruba]] town. Since then, the rulers of Isale Eko on Lagos Island have all descended from the Awori warrior Ashipa, the first Governor of the town assigned by the Oba of Benin whose interests he defended, while the land-owning nobility (Idejo) are Yoruba who trace their genealogy to Chief Olofin Ogunfunmire.
