Ikoyi Island
Ikoyi is located northeast of Obalende, on the west side of Lagos Island, and on the edge of the Lagos Lagoon. Ikoyi is considered one of Nigeria's wealthiest communities, popular with the country's extreme upper class people. The area that now makes up Ikoyi was once one continuous land mass with Lagos Island, until MacGregor canal, a tiny waterway created by the British colonial authority, separated it. This waterway has since been constructed over or filled, reuniting the island with Lagos Island. It has been dubbed the "Beverly Hills of the slum" or the "Belgravia of Lagos" in disparaging terms.
Awolowo Street, one of the city's main thoroughfares, is lined with upmarket boutiques, shops, and restaurants, and is one of the top attractions in the neighborhood. It is a factor that makes Ikoyi one of the most beautiful islands in Nigeria. It is a refuge for elite four-star hotels due to its proximity to Victoria Island, Lagos Island, and the man-made Banana Island.
