Ikoyi is considered one of Nigeria's wealthiest communities, popular with the country's extreme upper class people. The area that now makes up Ikoyi was once one continuous land mass with Lagos Island, until MacGregor canal, a tiny waterway created by the British colonial authority, separated it. This waterway has since been constructed over or filled, reuniting the island with Lagos Island. It has been dubbed the "Beverly Hills of the slum" or the "Belgravia of Lagos" in disparaging terms.
