In 1996, cousins Dinesh Agarwal and Brijesh Agarwal started IndiaMART as a directory of websites serving the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). Only about 15,000 people in India were online at that time.[9] In 1999, the directory already contained over a thousand entries.

Dot-com companies that survived the 2008–2009 recession in the United States invested in IndiaMART, One97 Communications, and Global Talent Track with some of the $10 million in Series A round funding they received from Intel Capital. IndiaMART's ad campaigns have featured Irrfan Khan, an Indian film actor, since November 2014.
